Any commercial, not for profit, or educational establishment needs people that can manage the resources and affairs of the organization. Even not for profit organizations need to have good management and business skills to use their income efficiently and organize the activities of personnel. While you may find that the working environment changes between these types of organization, the work required is broadly similar. The broad base of skills that you may learn at business school is highly sought after across the globe; you may truly have a 'world of opportunity'.
If self-employment as a consultant does not appeal, you are more likely to find entry-level employment in middle management, in charge of a medium sized department of a company or charity, or within a business development agency. Clearly, any industry sector that is flourishing will need people like you with the right skills and qualifications to oversee expansion. While it is not always necessary to have a background in a particular sector to get a job in it, you may find that your previous experience is taken into account. Many skills are however transferable between industries. According to the Bureau of Labor, growth industries are expected to be health care and education together with roles in companies specializing in technology. You may also find posts in marketing, finance, banking, accounting, general management, and personnel.
You will need to be able to get on with people at all levels, have good verbal and written communications skills, and be a good problem solver and analytical thinker. You may find it helpful if you tend to see 'the big picture' since many employment opportunities in business need people that are strategists rather than concerning themselves with small problems. You should have good levels of numeracy, planning, and organizational skills and be able to work under pressure. If you are good at influencing people, you may find this a great advantage. Depending on your chosen business school or online college, you may be required to have previous business experience, although a business qualification is not a general requirement. Competition for places at top ranking business schools can be intense so expect their entry requirements reflect this.
Business schools and online colleges offer a broad range of degrees in business, sometimes combined with other industry specific disciplines such as international marketing, finance, or project management. In general typical courses may include: business law, economics, marketing, project management, human resources, accounting, and business planning. You may be given exercises taken from real life business situations that will test your knowledge of these areas. On successful completion of this program, your first task may be to apply your newfound skills on marketing yourself to potential employers!
